Just to the west of Jericho Park on Northwest Marine Drive lies one of Vancouver's finest gems: Locarno Beach. This beautiful community resource proves to be a great place for groups to convene and individuals to utilize year after year. On the shores of English Bay, this sandy beach, lined with evergreen trees, is the perfect place to come when a day at the beach is just what you need! Wondering what there is to do at Locarno Beach in the spring? Below are four great ways you can make the most of this awesome spot.

Walk the Seawall

Locarno Beach is actually located on the Stanley Park seawall, a beautiful path boasting 22km in length that follows Vancouver's waterfront. The seawall was originally constructed in 1917 and has been expanded upon when appropriate ever since. Start at Locarno and walk, jog, rollerblade or bike down the seawall for some amazing views and a great way to get out and about.

Enjoy a Picnic

A picnic is the perfect way to celebrate a sunny spring day at Locarno Beach. The beach has 5 tables painted green and an area for the disposal of hot coals. Reserve your spot in advance. There are two different time slots you can make your reservation in, day (9AM-4PM) and evening (4PM-9:30PM). Reservations at Locarno cost $89.28, tax not included.

Try Stand Up Paddling

While spring might be a little too early to get fully immersed in the waters of English Bay for windsurfing, stand up paddling is a low impact sport that doesn't require you to get wet. This is, of course, provided that you have great balance! Rent a stand up paddleboard at the beach and take it out for a whirl. This is a very relaxing activity that works your core.

Play a Game of Volleyball

Volleyball is a great way to stay active and make new friends in the Vancouver area. Locarno Beach has six different volleyball courts that you can use. Check online to see what the drop in schedule is like. Otherwise, if the court isn't reserved, then it operates on a first come first served basis. Nets are available for rental from the lifeguard, though a credit card is necessary for a deposit while you are using the net. Make sure that you bring your own ball!

Locarno Beach is a great place to drink in the beauty of Vancouver and English Bay. It has a prime location just between Discovery St and Tolmie St on Marine Drive, and with the beautiful park and evergreens attached to it, Locarno Beach has become a popular destination for all different types of people of all different ages. Spending some time at the beach really is a wonderful way to enjoy the good weather, meet others, and feel connected to the community. Get active, move your body, and head out to Locarno Beach this spring to take advantage of the easy beauty that comes as part of the parcel when you live in Vancouver.
